The day isn't over and EPD has already responded to atleast four collisions within hours while responding to other crimes

EPD's original Facebook post about this collision was around 1 p.m. on November 7. EPD press releases issued have been added to the post.

This update at 2:25. EPD Commander Leonard LaFrance was at that scene. This collision involved a fatality.

EPD fatal collision press release (6:16 p.m.):

On November 07, 2023, at about 12:10 p.m., officers from the Eureka Police Department (EPD) as well as personnel from Humboldt Bay Fire (HBF) responded to the report of a two-vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Henderson and I Streets in Eureka.

It was reported that one vehicle had overturned and the occupants were still trapped inside.   HBF was able to remove the driver from the overturned vehicle who was then transported to a local hospital by City Ambulance for minor to moderate injuries.  The passenger in this vehicle was determined to have suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision.  A member of EPD’s Major Injury/Fatal Traffic Investigation Team responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.  Additionally, EPD Detectives and Evidence Technicians responded to assist with the collecting of statements and evidence.

The initial investigation has revealed the driver of the overturned vehicle was north on I St. and failed to stop at the red light at Henderson and was struck by another vehicle that was traveling west on Henderson.  Intoxication may have been a factor in this traffic collision. The occupants of the other involved vehicle were uninjured.  The decedent has been identified and the Humboldt County Coroner’s office is working to notify next of kin.  This is an active investigation and EPD is asking if anyone witnessed the collision to please contact the department at 707-441-4044.

Second collision:

The second collision was a couple of hours later . EPD Officer Andrew Endsley said one vehicle going southbound on Union and the other westbound on Henderson. Three injured people were sent to the hospital. Speed was a factor. Officer Endsley was on scene assisting Sgt. Jonathan Eckert who is in charge of investigating the second collision.

The crashes don't even cover the other crimes EPD has responded to throughout the day. Some collisions did not result in any injuries.

EPD Press Release (Henderson and Union released 11/8/23 10:29 a.m.):

On November 07, 2023, at about 2:04 p.m., officers from the Eureka Police Department (EPD) as well as personnel from Humboldt Bay Fire (HBF) responded to the report of a two-vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Henderson and Union Streets in Eureka.

It was reported that one vehicle, a Ford SUV, had overturned and the occupant was still trapped inside.   HBF was able to remove the driver from the overturned vehicle who was then transported to a local hospital by City Ambulance for moderate to serious injuries.   The second vehicle, a silver Honda Sedan, had come to rest atop a brick fence in the yard on the southwest corner of the intersection.  The driver and passenger of this vehicle were both 15 years old and able to self-extricate from the vehicle.  Both suffered moderate to serious injuries and were transported by City Ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.  At this time, intoxication does not appear to be a factor in this collision.

This is an active investigation and EPD is asking if anyone witnessed the collision to please contact Sergeant Jonathan Eckert at 707-441-4081.  EPD is specifically wanting to speak to the driver of a white vehicle that was stopped at the stop sign on Union Street at Henderson at the time of the collision.  The Eureka Police Department want to thank our community for its patience yesterday as we investigated these traffic collisions and for those that have provided us valuable information.
