Local freelancer for several media convicted for DUI, BAC charge and a DUI penalty for excessive BAC or test refusal

49 year old Mark Wayne Mckenna was booked & released from Humboldt County jail yesterday morning for time served. In this case, McKenna was charged with VC 23153 (a) DUI, VC 23152(b) blood alcohol over legal limit and VC 23578 DUI penalty involving an excessive BAC or a chemical test refusal.

McKenna's attorney for this case is Ms. Kathleen Bryson. Count 2 was dismissed as a part of his plea. McKenna pleaded guilty to Count 1 and admitted the special allegation for Count 2.

Mckenna was sentenced on 9/27 by Judge Steven Steward to 5 days in jail, three years probation, 9 month DUI program, fine of $1889. He has a payment plan on file. His original commit date of 10/28/23 was changed to 11/11/23. He was sentenced to 5 days, gets 4 days credit and is then booked and released?

Why is there no record of an arrest? Did his 2023 arrest never make the booking log? This DUI was a month after a conviction in another case filed in May 2023 for excessive speeding. Would any other defendant with the same charges be given the same deal and treatment? Eureka Police Department did their job. This is a question for the DA Stacey Eads. Under her "leadership", there are too many plea deals to certain defendants which are a slap on the wrist. Without even going through my blog, I can think of at least two cases this year. Mckenna's and another case in which the defendant is represented by Ms. Bryson.

Other cases for Mckenna in the system are a divorce case and a probate guardianship case.

McKenna is a local freelance photographer and graphic designer. You have seen his name on Redheaded Blackbelt, NorthCoast Journal, Lost Coast Outpost. According to his Linkedin profile, he  previously worked at the Times-Standard as photo and graphics editor.
