The police should not have to deal with a societal issue caused by politicians from the two major parties.
The Humboldt growers were blamed for high rents in the past. In Humboldt, DHHS, Cal Poly, the hospitals, non profits, people converting properties into Airbnbs and short term rentals are the major and current contributors to lack of affordable housing in Humboldt. There are plenty scams for housings and rentals with people taking advantage of a situation that is getting worse.
Most property owners and landlords in Humboldt are greedy and demand unreasonable security deposits and rents for substandard properties because they can and they chose renters who will not complain which is why most in Humboldt prefer a government check or someone out of the area they can scam instead of providing stability to people chosing to work and live locally.
From non profits to Christian programs, help is selective and the people getting grants or individual donations help who they want. That is a Humboldt unique problem. Grants don't go towards housing, they go towards other expenses.
The City of Eureka is trying to limit vacation rentals. Some developer or NIMBY or frontperson will sue. What are the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors doing? The presentations in their meetings are hooey and don't reflect reality.
There is virtually no enforcement of California laws supposed to protect renters unless it serves a PR purpose. The court system favors the rich. Politicians allow their funders to profit while homelessness increases.
