Today, Melissa Johnson and convicted sex offender Von Keener's case was on for setting of preliminary hearing and Keener's parole case is on for pre trial. It is expected to settle this morning. Then heard from one of the victim's family members and friend both cases are resolving. Who knows when this morning because there are several cases resolving.
After break, 10:20 a.m., attorneys went in for intervention so courtroom 2 is closed.
10:45: Two family members upset that Johnson was in the courtroom. One said the f word and left on her own. Another got into it with Ms. Kathleen Bryson, Johnson's attorney and was cautioned by bailiffs that while they were upset not to interact with attorneys.
11:30 : Sentencing finally concluded with changes, interruptions.
Both pleaded to Count 1, Johnson's is an open plea. Keener is getting the high term of 3 years. He also pleaded guilty to violation of probation. D Johnson and Keener will be sentenced on different days.
Both waived jurisdiction issue for Shasta County and cannot appeal based on that reason.
Johnson's sentencing is on August 2. Johnson entered an Arbuckle waiver and her sentencing is scheduled in Courtroom 5.
Von Keener's sentencing is trailing his sex offender case. Trial confirmation in that case is scheduled for November 4; jury trial November 14.
Mr. Joe Judge is Keener's attorney. Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees is the prosecutor.
Mr. Rees handed Judge Kaleb Cockrum a letter from the Shasta County attorney waiving jurisdiction for Johnson and Keener. GPS led to vehicles being located. Both Johnson and Keener claim they found out about Mauricio Johnson and the Bear River triple homicide in Redding and left for Utah from Redding.
Ms. Bryson said her client has no prior record. Melissa Johnson claims she found out from her sister in Redding about Mauricio Johnson and the Bear River triple homicide . "She then followed the caravan of evil to Utah" and told police officer in Utah.
