Attempted murder suspect had a prior conviction in Stockton

 


Arcata attempted murder suspect Kaven Latheniel Dangerfield was arraigned today.

He is charged with Count 1, attempted murder with a special allegation of use of a deadly weapon; a knife. Count 2 is assault with a deadly weapon with special allegation of great bodily injury. Another special allegation which pertains to both Counts 1 and 2 is that Dangerfield has a prior conviction of a serious or violent felony. That conviction was for burglary in Stockton.

Alleged victim is Samuel William Matranga.

Dangerfield was on a no bail status. Judge Wilson set bail at $750,000 pending completion of arraignment.

Arraignment was continued to tomorrow because Dangerfield wants to represent himself and needs to complete a form with a Faretta waiver. Dangerfield was provided the complaint and initial discovery today.

Twice, Judge Wilson explained to him the seriousness of the charges and asked if he wanted an attorney to be appointed for free to consult before making the decision to be pro per. Dangerfield was adamant both times.





7/23: Dangerfield decided to ask for an attorney. The Public Defender's office was appointed to represented Dangerfield. OR/bail was waived without prejudice.

7/26: The victim requested a temporary civil harassment order in civil court and it was granted. A hearing to make that order permanent is scheduled on 8/16.
