John Chiv: Former Humboldt public defender called drug user and opportunist by Judge and his former PD bosses

Mr. Patrik Griego is Humboldt Judge Gregory Kreis' attorney. Former Humboldt Deputy Public Defender Rory Kalin is suing Kreis as well as current Public Defender Luke Brownfield and former Public Defender Marek Reavis. In a motion to compel defendants want Kalin to submit to independent medical examinations. Defendants also call Kalin a drug user and an opportunist.

I am certainly not going to defend Kalin or his court performance. He has attorneys and can respond. He bought this lawsuit and he knew what to expect. I observed Kalin in court and his substandard performance is no different than certain other public defenders or certain private local attorneys.

Another messy, drama filled lawsuit with featuring the Real Clowns of Dumboldt Superior Court. There is a lot of posturing and I doubt the real and complete story and how much truth is there on what each side claims will be revealed to the public.

The only good thing about this lawsuit is that it is exposing the underbelly of Humboldt Superior Court. Only some of it so far and only because I have covered it with the knowledge of the backstory and players. I hope more comes out but a lot has been buried already and the CA Judicial Council and Commission on Judicial Performance are dragging their feet.

Given the chummy relationship of certain public defenders and private attorneys with Kreis and the arrogant, disrespectful behavior and lackluster performance in court by certain public defenders who spend more time drinking coffee, guffawing and cackling in court while certain other public defenders are working hard and running from court to court, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? Aren't certain people exploiting their personal relationship with current Presiding Judge Gregory Kreis? From certain court bailiffs, lawyers to court staff, Kreis has his nasty minions entrenched and Little Napolean Kreis certainly likes to wield power. While this lawsuit is being decided, Kreis should not be in a position to collect his $260,000 salary and control the livelihoods of the people and oversee the very system in which he is currently a defendant.

If Kreis wants to get down and dirty and personal, maybe Kalin should ask how Kreis is paying his attorney? Heard Kreis sold his house, his boat so where is he living and who with? Kreis has more complaints against him than any Humboldt judge. What exactly did Kreis do about convicted sex offender Joe Hale preying on women in courts and abusing his court job for years? I hope certain depositions on yesterday's list become public record.

Since Kreis just ruled in favor of the First Amendment for a local independent internet news site, he should be all about transparency and free speech when it comes to Humboldt courts, himself, his buddies and the lawsuit against him.

Maybe taxpayers should be questioning who and what oversight is there of the time staff spend at the Public Defenders' office. The BOS and the good ole Humboldt network won't. I brought up in the past that there were other qualified candidates but Brownfield got the job? Why? Humboldt courts are just as like the County with an inner circle scratching each other's back. You either play the game or get out of the way.
