Eureka Police Department has aready have lost 5 officers this year and it is only 6 months. Sgt. Eddie Wilson retired last December and moved to Redding. Officer Brian Wilson resigned, Comander Greg Hill is resigning this month and starting as an investigator at the Humboldt DA's officer and two other senior officers are applying to other agencies.
Reasons officers are leaving vary but include housing costs, lower salary, inflation, extreme call volume, and management style for the last few administrations.
I saw a hiring ad at Eureka City Hall for what a brand new officer's salary would be and it is a joke. Humboldt rental, real estate and other costs are unreasonable. An officer can get paid more and live for less in Redding.
I see more former EPD at the courthouse. An experienced detective like Rick Bise who would be a great asset in any EPD leadership is now working as a court bailiff.
"While retention of qualified police officers is an occasional problem for all departments, it may be a major concern for smaller departments located on the fringes of major metropolitan areas." --U. S. Department of Justice
