Jury selection had been going on since June 1. It took but finally on 6/26, a jury was sworn in alleged molester Frederick Bernard Adams. The time estimate for the entire trial was 25 days; it took that long to select a jury.
There are multiple victims. Charges were amended right before trial.
Court minutes have been added to this post to give you an idea of some of the witnesses and key issues.
This is Deputy District Attorney Luke Bernthal's first sex abuse trial. Mr. Zack Curtis is Adam's attorney. The trial was assigned to Retired Judge Christopher Wilson.
This is the first sex abuse trial in Humboldt where I have seen a service animal allowed in with the alleged victim. Judge Wilson has a dog of his own so his ruling does not surprise me. I think allowing a service animal is a better idea than a Victim Witness Advocate because there is personal and deeper connection and the alleged victim feels safe and protected.
