HCSO investigating suspicious death in Blue Lake


On Sept. 11, 2021, at about 11:40 a.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Communications Center received a call regarding a deceased male located near a trail off of Hatchery Road in Blue Lake.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies and a deputy coroner responded to the scene and recovered the remains. The circumstances surrounding this death appear suspicious and the case is being investigated by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Division.

The decedent’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification. The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office is in the process of scheduling an autopsy.

Update 9/21:

The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office has identified the remains recovered Sept. 11, 2021, near Hatchery Road in Blue Lake as 65-year-old Eugene Steven Segal of Blue Lake.

An autopsy of Segal was conducted, and his cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma and stab wounds. Segal’s manner of death has been determined to be homicide.
