Alice in Wonderland or Humboldt Superior Court

Humboldt Superior Court is chaotic. There are currently two jury trials going on and the usual jammed court calendar with a lot of continuances and as usual, last minute rescheduling and changes.

Shortage of staff. Supervisors filing in. No one at the information room in payments/information on the second floor for two days and not even a sign or note.

The frontline staff and mid level supervisors still showing up to work are holding the place together but will never get the accolades they deserve.

One woman kept threatening people. The woman is a "regular" around town.

The woman was ranting before she approached court staff. The woman said she was there to testify for the cops against drug dealers. The "cops took all her stuff." She was afraid if she went into court that she would be arrested. She kept insisting she was going to get her court case moved to Courtroom 2 with Judge Marilyn Miles.

Retired Judge Miles courtroom was 2 but she is no longer there. Court staff, a bailiff and Conflict Counsel Supervising Attorney Meagan O' Connell tried to help her and direct her to talk to her attorney. You can't talk or help someone who is bat shit crazy and high.

She exited the courthouse after screaming she wanted to kill someone. Thankfully, she was not around when jurors were on break.

Jurors for Courtroom 3 and 1 were taking a break in the hallway.  In courtroom 1, jury selection is going on for the Markis Shirley trial.

Recall of Gavin Newsom, the pandemic, masks, vaccinations and the typical breaks and sitting outside the courtroom for hours were topics jurors were chatting about. Just like many in Humboldt, some jurors and public are not physical distancing when they are outside court. Some people voming in to court or the courthouse regularly come in  without masks. When the bailiffs  enforce the rule, they run to ask information for a mask.
