After almost 25 years of serving and protecting the public, HCSO Captain Kym Thompson retires



She is the first and only female operations patrol deputy in Humboldt County history to promote beyond the rank of patrol sergeant, the second of only two female deputies ever assigned to the Humboldt County Drug Task Force, and a champion of ethics and accountability.

Former Del Norte DA joins Mendocino District Attorney's office as Chief Deputy


August 24 is the Mendocino Assistant District Attorney Richard T. Welsh's last day.  Mr. Welsh joined the DA's management staff in June 2016. He is leaving to help with extended family health issues, according to the Mendocino District Attorney's office.

Former Del Norte DA Dale P. Trigg will assist the Mendocino DA with office and trial management, as the DA's Chief Deputy. Mr. Trigg has been assigned to the Ukiah office.

Preliminary hearing confirmed for Cory Fisher but further intervention also scheduled for next week


Intervention was scheduled for former Correctional Deputy Cory Fisher was scheduled this afternoon. Preliminary hearing scheduled for September 6 confirmed. However, a further intervention set for August 29.

Sex offender arrested for cultivating marijuana



In July of 2018, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office Marijuana Enforcement Team became aware that Charles Phillip Maniaci, a 65 year old male, from Leggett California,  was cultivating marijuana.

Preliminary hearing for murder suspect Richard Dean vacated



Intervention was scheduled for murder suspect Richard Dean on August 22. It was continued to August 23. Preliminary scheduled for August 27 was vacated. Setting is scheduled for August 29.

Melissa McKinnon in custody after she was spotted climbing in a rear window of her own home


On 08/22/2018, at approximately 1735 hrs, the Arcata Police Department was alerted by a passerby, that Melissa McKinnon had been spotted climbing into the rear window of her own residence.

J.D. Grow's jury trial scheduled for January; charges include lewd act upon a child


Trial setting was scheduled for J. D. Grow on August 15. It was continued to August 23. It has been continued a few times as defense is waiting on a report from a firearms expert.

Jury trial confirmed for former Miss Hoopa' s alleged sexual abuse of a female minor


Trial confirmation was scheduled for former Miss Hoopa Kayla Brown on August 23. Jury trial confirmed for September 4.

Setting of sentencing for Sohum upskirting suspect continued again

Setting of sentencing and doctor's report for Sohum upskirting suspect David Nunez  scheduled on 8/23 was continued again, to September 27.

Judge Feeney denies placement of Joshua Cooley in Freshwater area



Denial of placement in the Freshwater was Judge John Feeney's tentative decision, which was then his final decision. He had to reiterate that a few times, after public comment.

"This is not about Freshwater or Eureka"



Even after Judge John Feeney denied the placement of sexually violent predator Joshua Cooley in Freshwater, there were some public comments.

Most speakers reiterated that Cooley should not be in any neighborhood and that it was not just about Freshwater, or Eureka.

So many people showed up to speak at Joshua Cooley's placement hearing, it was moved to the Board of Supervisor Chambers



Sexually violent predator Joshua Cooley's placement hearing was moved to the Board of Supervisors Chambers since Courtroom 4 was packed and there were still  people outside. This was suggested by Judge John Feeney.

Protest planned outside the Courthouse on September 4 to protest lenient treatment of Marci Kitchen by Humboldt Courts

September 4 is when there is a hearing scheduled for Marci Kitchen regarding her custody status. Judge Kaleb Cockrum denied the People's request on August 20 for no bail and to remand Kitchen into custody. This was after Kitchen entered her change of plea. Sentencing is scheduled for September 18.

Alleged molestor Carpathian files petition against Humboldt County Correctional Facility challenging his detention



On August 21, Humboldt County Superior Court clerk John Beideman aka Carpathian, filed a writ of habeas corpus petition. No court date has been scheduled yet.

In his criminal case, Beideman has a jury trial scheduled for November 5 for the alleged molestation of his former stepdaughter. In that case, he is being represented by Mr. Russ Clanton. Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads is prosecuting the case.

Melissa McKinnon identified as suspect for several residential burglaries in Arcata


During the months of July and August, the City of Arcata experienced a significant number of residential burglaries. Many of these burglaries occurred during daylight hours while residents were at work.
