Leggett man's DUI, hit and run and vehicular manslaughter goes to trial within 6 months of arrest

Vehicular manslaughter, hit and run and DUI suspect Earl Castillo's jury trial is currently going on in Courtroom 3 with Judge Steven Steward presiding. Deputy District Attorney Emily Norgaard is the prosecutor. Deputy Conflict Counsel RJ Leohner is Castillo's attorney. Castillo is charged with killing Stephen Allen Ray.

Jury trials for forcible rape suspect Hudson Jack and another more well known case for voluntary manslaughter suspect Russell Holt were both supposed to start yesterday and were rescheduled due to no courtrooms being available. Both those cases are 2022 cases. Castillo was arrested in September 2023.

Count 6 dismissed by People at defense request. Judge Steward denied defense PC 1118.1 motions which were request for acquittal made due to insufficient evidence.
