No one wants Cooley, agency in Humboldt designated to assist Liberty Healthcare in search

Placement hearing for sexually violent predator Joshua Cooley was continued to July 17.

Conflict Counsel Supervising Attorney Meagan O'Connell is Cooley's attorney. She was briefly the Interim Public Defender and Cooley's case had been transferred to that office. It is back with the Conflict Counsel's office.

District Attorney Maggie Fleming appeared for the People. Deputy County Counsel Heather Cooper appeared for the County and she had requested the continuance.

Ms. Cooper said "she asked around" and the agency to assist would be the Humboldt County Community Connections Resource Center and the contacts at Probation are Mr. S. Brenneman and Coral Sanders.
"I believe this will resolve the issue" in Ms. O'Connell's motion.

Ms. O'Connell agreed with Ms. Cooper.

Liberty Healthcare's Regional Coordinator Rafael Loya and Dr. Cameron Zeidler were present  for Liberty Healthcare. Since the last hearing, an additional 635 properties were searched in Humboldt, Sacramento, San Francisco and San Diego counties.

Judge John Feeney previously denied a request by Liberty Healthcare and defense for a County agency to assist in search to secure housing for Cooley.

The defense filed a motion that the County designate an agency to secure housing in Humboldt.

The People filed a memorandum in response.

At the last hearing, Dr. Zeidler asked the Court to state "extraordinary circumstances exist" to find housing for Cooley outside Humboldt and to authorize Liberty Healthcare to notify other counties to search for potential placements. The counties are Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Francisco. That authorization was given today.

Next placement hearing is on August 14. Except for Judge Feeney and court personnel, everyone else appeared via Zoom.
