Louise Turpin married when she was 16 and he was 23. They moved from Virginia to Texas and then to California.
The Turpins renewed their vows at least three times according to an article by Michael Balsamo, an AP writer. In the article Balsamo alleges the children were allegedly chained for weeks or months at a time and not freed to use the bathroom. Their punishments included frequent beatings and strangulation, according to Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin.
The children were only allowed to shower once a year, Hestrin said. 'When washing their hands, if they washed above their wrists, they would be accused of playing in the water and would be chained up, he said."
The Turpins "would buy food for themselves but did not allow their children to eat it. They placed apple and pumpkin pies on the table, let their children look at the food but would not let them eat any of it, Hestrin said. The couple also purchased "a lot of toys they never opened," he said.
Bail is now $12 million each.
