EPD Chief Watson explain's yesterday's increased police presence in Old Town andon Broadway

Yesterday afternoon you may have noticed increased police presence along the Broadway corridor and in the Old Town area.  Around a dozen officers, in pairs, conducted an enforcement operation specifically looking to locate and enforce relevant Eureka Municipal Code and Penal Code violations including stolen/misappropriated shopping carts (which were returned to their businesses of origin).

Earlier in the day, our patrol officers also received several hours of training on basic room/building clearing principles, tactics and techniques. EPD was able to provide for this training and enforcement operation due to the team shift schedule we currently employ, which allows for a monthly overlap/training day for half of our officers assigned to patrol.

Among the many training topics we have planned for this year are tactical de-escalation and Principled Policing (which includes implicit bias training) courses.
