EPD Chief Steve Watson released this statement about Jennifer Willey:

"Concerning the press release I've included below, I still believe there is sufficient evidence to hold and prosecute the suspect despite the victim's reluctance to cooperate, though ultimately that will be the decision of the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office once they review the case.  Our detectives and officers did a great job investigating and quickly solving this crime.  The suspect, Jennifer Willey, is still in custody with bail set at $50,000. "


EPD Press Release:

On January 17, 2018, at about 5:38 p.m., officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to the foot of Truesdale Street for the report of a stabbing that had just occurred.  Officers located a 42 year old female victim with a stab wound to the abdominal area.  The victim was transported to St. Joseph Hospital by ambulance with what appeared to be a non-life threatening wound.

Officers and detectives began searching the area and conducting interviews. As a result, the female suspect was soon located at a nearby campsite and detained. She was identified as 35 year old Jennifer Willey. During an interview with detectives, Willey admitted to stabbing the victim during an altercation.  Willey was taken into custody and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility for assault with a deadly weapon.

Based on the investigation, it appears that the victim and Willey were known to each other and got into a physical altercation.  During the fight, Willey stabbed the victim with a knife then fled back to her camp.
On the morning of January 18th, a detective re-interviewed the victim.  The victim was not cooperative and refused to press charges.  The case will be forwarded to the District Attorney for review.
