I chose this specific image for this post. Those it is meant for do not need an explaination.
I am a city person, will always be.
Eureka is a walkable city offering the pros of downtown, urban city in a small, rural County. Yes, a car is convenient but not necesary and walking is healthy. With ride shares, if you can afford them, it is doable if you live anywhere in Eureka.
It is unfortunate that public transit is not convenient or safe and it is dirty but that is everywhere in the U.S.
The number one positive for me is Eureka Police Department. Granted, I know many at EPD through the work I do, previously from church but even before I had this blog or was politically involved; EPD has always been responsive.
They followup. They call back. It is also in the approach. Often if I see a chronic issue also affecting other residents and businesses, I reach out to the appropriate Sgt or admin. If I see something that requires attention I call. A non emergency can wait and EPD dispatch is excellent.
I have lived in other places besides Eureka and Humboldt County. Our local law enforcement does not get the kudos it deserves. Now people can report crime or give a tip online. Convenient.
If we want the community we live in to be safer and issues addressed; we need to be active partners and participants.
At any given time, EPD is answering multiple calls. There was a non emergency but ongoing issue and I called dispatch. EPD Officer Ben Altic called me within minutes to get more details to further assess the situation; he was at the other end of town and assured me he would be following up.
I often write about generational families. The one I am going to highlight this time is an asset to the community.
Ben Altic has followed his father's footsteps in working at EPD but all the Altics are an asset to this community. I know the Altics, they are private and I won't say more than I have been at their home, seen them at church and in the community. They are a good example of a loving marriage, mom and dad, raising wonderful, caring children who are now adults and giving back to this community.
There are more families, husbands and wives, all private. They live their lives daily with faith in action and doing a lot for their communities unseen and without expecting anything.
