Did you know that before EPD was formed, Eureka had a Town Marshall who enforced the law against "rowdies", drunks and hogs?

"Beginning today, you might notice Eureka Police Department (EPD) Officers wearing a new badge that commemorates the department’s past as well as its future as we look ahead to EPD’s 125th anniversary in July.

While Eureka was founded as a town in 1850 and incorporated as a city in 1874, Eureka’s City Council chartered the Office of the Chief of Police on July 8, 1895, establishing the Eureka Police Department as the agency it has evolved into today.  Prior to 1895, Eureka had a Town Marshall.

Extensive research conducted by EPD’s in-house “historian,” Detective Richard “Rick” Bise, revealed the style of the new badge is similar to ones worn by Eureka Police officers in the 1940’s.  The design and selection of the badge was a several month collaborative process by department members that included input internally as well as externally.  After months of working on the design, the finished project was officially decided upon in early 2020.  “The badge is a symbol of authority, sacrifice, service and tradition as we protect and serve our community. As we prepare to celebrate the Eureka Police Department’s 125th anniversary this July, we give a nod to the heroes of the past who honorably served as we look forward to the promise of our future,” said Chief Steve Watson."
