Richard French goes off on a rant in court and criminal proceedings are suspended

After not guilty pleas were entered, specialallegations were denied and dates were set for his jury trial this morning, Richard French went off on a rant.

"I am confused," said French. "I am under protective custody. I am expecting to go home now. I have not been charged."

"You need to address this with your attorney," said Judge Kaleb Cockrum.

Deputy Public Defender Ben McLaughlin  his attorney told French that OR and supervised release had been denied. "We had that hearing," said Mr. McLaughlin. "We had that discussion. If you post bail, you will be released."

French went on about "none of the facts" and said, " I was assaulted by  a mob."

Mr. McLaughlin declared doubt per PC
1368. Criminal proceedings were suspended.

"I think he understands the nature of the proceedings," said Mr. McLaughlin. "He is unable to assist with his defense."

Judge Kaleb Cockrum said he witnessed some confusion from French and it is all on record.

Dr. Wilson was appointed to evaluate French at taxpayer expense.

I posted his charges yesterday. That post is linked below. Deputy District Attorney Whitney Timm appeared for the People.
