Attempted murder and torture suspect Luigi Messina refuses to wear civilian clothing, appears in front of jurors in red jail jumpsuit

Attempted murder, mayhem, torture and assault with a deadly weapon suspect Luigi Messina was in regular clothes yesterday. A dress shirt and pants.

Today, Judge Steward was informed that Messina is refusing to wear civilian clothing and wishes to wear the jail issued jumpsuit. Judge Steward advised Messina of his rights. Messina refused to change.

Messina is in court in a red jumpsuit which means Messina is in admin segregation. Eureka Police Department Detective Raymond Nunez was recalled by Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer as a rebuttal  witness and testified this morning.

After closing arguments concluded, the jury of 10 women and two men started deliberations around 2:22 p.m. I heard Messina's sister tell Ms. Andrea Sullivan. "This is a tough case..." and that she appreciated Ms. Sullivan.

Jury left the deliberation room at 4:16 p.m. I was on the second floor when the jurors walked out and I saw them the leave building by 4:18 p.m. I know the court minutes say 4:19 and that could be when the clerk was informed by the bailiff.

Messina is on a no bail status. As of 6/6/25, Messina has been in custody for 630 days. Alleged incident date is 9/15/2023.

Messina is charged with Count 1 PC 206 torture. Count 2 PC 664/187 (a) attempted murder with two special allegations; PC 12022.7(a) great boldily injury and PC 12022 (b) (1) use of a deadly weapon. Count 3 PC 203 mayhem with special allegation PC 12022 (b) (1). Count 4 PC 245 (a) (1) assault with a deadly weapon with special allegation PC 12022.7 (a).
