Ms. April Van Dyke is Democrat and incumbent Judge Gregory Kreis is registered as a non partisan. There was a HCDCC meeting last night. I just confirmed Ms. Van Dyke got the endorsement.
Ms. Van Dyke is a candidate for Humboldt Superior Court and is a former Deputy Conflict Counsel.
In addition to other endorsements on her website, Ms. Van Dyke already has the endorsement of her former boss, Conflict Counsel Supervising Attorney Meagan O'Connell; former Deputy Public Defender and local attorney Rosemary Deck and former Deputy District Attorney and former Deputy Public Defender Brie Bennett. Ms. Bennett prosecuted many cases including the high profile rape case which resulted in the conviction of Kailan Meserve.

I did a post on January 9 on registration for Humboldt Superior Court Judge and First District Supervisor.
On April 16, Ms. Van Dyke "will be speaking to voters and the press about her candidacy for judge at the Eureka Boardwalk behind Bayfront and Living the Dream at 12:15pm. " I have already written about Ms. Van Dyke several times covering court cases and in previous posts about her running as a candidate. I have also written about her opponent, the incumbent, several times in a decade of covering Humboldt Superior Court.
Ms. Van Dyke's press release (issued January 12):
On January 16th April Van Dyke will be speaking to voters and the press about her candidacy for judge at the Eureka Boardwalk behind Bayfront and Living the Dream at 12:15pm.
April will be addressing why she is the right choice for Humboldt County. As a judge she will strive for Equality, Inclusion, and Honesty in Humboldt County.
Equality: In Humboldt County the Native population is charged with crimes at a rate two times their white counterparts and the Black population is charged at a rate three times their white counterparts. In 2014, the Supreme Court addressed discrimination stating, “[t]he way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to speak openly and candidly on the subject of race, and to apply the Constitution with eyes open to the unfortunate effects of centuries of racial discrimination.” As a judge she will seek equal justice for all residence of Humboldt County.
Inclusion: Restorative justice is a process which supports the victim of a crime and the person responsible to communicate, repair harm, and find a positive way forward. It focuses on making the person responsible aware of the harm they caused and helps them to make reparations. The research suggests that restorative justice has reduced reoffending by an average of 13%. Additionally, studies have shown positive outcomes for victims reducing post-traumatic stress and anger with the justice system. As a judge April hopes to spearhead a robust restorative justice program in Humboldt County.
Honesty: “There is one branch of government devoted to “Fairness” – the Judicial Branch – and it’s the number one goal of the Judicial Council of California. Our justice system relies on public trust and confidence to support the rule of law.”– Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye (October 2014)
The judiciary is only as strong as the communities’ trust that judges will maintain high standards of conduct. You can trust April to follow the law and conduct herself in a manner Humboldt County can be proud of.
April has been endorsed by the Humboldt County Democrats. She is a dedicated attorney entering her 14th year of practice. She has represented clients in numerous jurisdictions. She has litigated thousands of cases in her career. April has extensive litigation and trial experience. Learn more about her at april4judge.com
