Coronavirus and safety of all involved leads to Cesar Valenzuela's current jury trial date being vacated

Cesar Valenzuela is the only defendant from the Manila 5 group in the Tyson Claros' case who has not resolved his case.  Three co-defendants have been sentenced and one is awaiting sentencing.

Trial confirmation for Valenzuela was scheduled for May 18. The jury trial for June 8 was vacated after defense motion to continue was granted by Judge Lawrence Killoran. Setting of jury trial is scheduled for June 17.

Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo is Valenzuela's attorney. Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Schaffer is the prosecutor for the case.

Ms. Schaffer did not object since the motion to continue was based on safety concerns and the coronavirus related closure of courtrooms to the public. Defendants are appearing via video conferencing. Only Judges, court staff and some attorneys are in court these days.

At first Valenzuela refused to appear via video conferencing. After talking with Mr. Russo, he consented.
