EPD handled average of 244 incidents per day in 10 days since shelter in place order issued

Hello, Eureka.  I hope this Wednesday afternoon finds you safe and well. I want to share with you another COVID-19 related update from the Eureka Police Department, this one regarding our calls for service volume over the first 10 days of the County Health Officer's Shelter in Place (SIP) Order (March 20-29, 2020).

During this 10-day period, EPD handled an average of 244 incidents a day (includes fire/medical).  This is an overall increase of 19% compared to pre-SIP order.

Officer initiated activity made up 48% of all incidents.  Calls for service (people calling EPD to request assistance, report an issue etc.) made up 52% of all incidents.  The most common call types were:  Medical 13%, Suspicious Persons 8%, and Disturbances 6%.  There was nearly no change in our overall service call volume as compared to pre-SIP order.

Officer self-initiated activity went up 56% compared to before the shelter in place order was issued. This is a good thing  as it shows our officers are out and about actively patrolling your neighborhoods and businesses more than ever.

From a cursory review of crime reports, it does appear we have seen an increase in burglaries (residential and non-residential).  Be sure to take common sense crime prevention steps to safeguard your homes and properties, especially when they will be unattended.  Alarm systems help.  use one!  The Eureka Police department will be suspending false alarm billing for the months of March and April in response to the ongoing COVID-19 Public Health Order.  The waiving of false alarm fees is another way the Police Department, in partnership with the City, is trying to offset the hardships felt by citizens and businesses.-EPD Chief Steve Watson
