Why was the decision to continue the Yang motion so last minute?
Motion to continue Seng Yang's jury trial scheduled for today but was put over to trial assignment, at the last minute after an email from Presiding Judge Hinrichs was sent to Judge Lawrence Killoran in court this morning.
This after everyone present waited around in court for a while including a Hmong court interpreter who came here from Sacramento.
Trial assignment is tomorrow. Jury trial is scheduled for May 29.
Yang's charges include forcible rape of his own daughter and forcing her to participate in porn.
Family members were at the courthouse this morning but not in court. Jane Doe #1's foster mother has been present for every hearing.
The prosecutor for the case is Deputy District Attorney Stacey Eads. DA Maggie Fleming was in court for the People.
Yang's attorney is Deputy Public Defender Luke Brownfield. Deputy Public Defender Casey Russo appeared in court for him this morning.
This is the second time Mr. Brownfield has not been in court and his colleagues have had to appear for him, which adds to minutes of waiting.
This week Mr. Ben McLaughlin is not here so the PD office is short staffed. Everyone could have been spared hanging out in Courtroom 3 this morning if the motion had been scheduled for trial assignment. Things like this waste court time and cause "court congestion."
You can click on the links below and catch up via several detailed posts on why this continuance is Yang's own doing. This includes the post I did yesterday.
