Soroptimist International of Humboldt Bay offers six scholarships


Soroptimist International of Humboldt Bay is offering six scholarships.


Ruby Award: For Women Helping Women
This award honors women who, through their professional or personal efforts, are making extraordinary differences in the lives of women or girls.

Honorees are women who have worked to improve the lives of other women or girls. Their work has had a significant impact, and also inspires and encourages other women.

The winner of this club-level award will receive a $1000 donation to the charity of her choice and be recognized at an event in her honor.  She will also be eligible to compete at a higher level of Soroptimist organizations.  The winner of the finalist award will be selected by an online poll. She should be available to accept the award in person and will receive an additional monetary donation to a charitable organization of her choice.

Live Your Dream Award:
The Soroptimist Live Your Dream Awards give women the resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. Eligible applicants must be women who provide the primary financial support for their families, and who are enrolled in or have been accepted to a vocational/ skills training program or an undergraduate degree program. 

The women may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, including books, childcare and transportation. The program begins on the local club level and the winner will receive an award of $1500.  This winner will also become eligible to receive region-level awards, which are granted through Soroptimist’s 28 geographic regions. Currently, each Soroptimist region grants one first-place monetary award.

Women’s Re-Entry Award:
This award is designed specifically for single re-entry women who are not raising children but need help financing their education.  This award is meant to offer women the resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. 

Applicants must be attending Humboldt State University or College of the Redwoods. Eligible applicants must meet the income eligibility criteria for the College of the Redwoods EOPS Program or the Humboldt State University EOP program.

Violet Richardson Award:
The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts such as: fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty.

Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest. 
Are you a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteers in your community or school?  If you are a young woman who believes in the power of volunteer action, then you may be eligible to win a Violet Richardson Award of $1500.

Distinguished Youth Award:
A Distinguished Youth Scholarship is the amount of $1500 is awarded to qualifying Eureka area high school students who take an active part in service in the home, school and/or community. 

Applicants must be graduating seniors from any Eureka area high school including charter and community schools and not be 21 years of age before June 30, 2018.  This scholarship is given in recognition of outstanding contributions made by young people to home, school, community, country and the world.  

Eligibility requirements are to be a graduating high school senior: to have shown a high degree of cooperation, courtesy and consideration for others; to have demonstrated the ability to lead with self control, dignity and responsibility; to have pursued goals with commitment and purpose; and to not be a Soroptimist or an immediate family member of a Soroptimist club member.
