This morning, attorneys presented their closing arguments in David Gregory Chessey's DUI case. When I left the courthouse, the jurors were waiting to go back into Courtroom 3 for final instructions from Humboldt Superior Court Judge Steven Steward.
Chessey's is charged with three misdemeanors in the 2024 case. Count 1 VC 23152 (a) DUI, Count 2 VC 23152 (b) BAC above the legal limit and Count 3 VC 23222 (a) possessiion of an open container of alcohol while driving.
This is just one of the many DUI arrests and cases in Humboldt County. I decided to do a post because it is a trial between recently hired Deputy District Attorney Matt Dobie who formerly worked as a Humboldt Superior Court clerk and recently hired Deputy Public Defender Ehvan Schectman.
I have reported on a previous trial by Mr. Schectman. As far as I know, this is Mr. Dobie's first trial. Today is the fourth day of jury trial. This includes motions in limine and jury selection which started on 9/15.
There was a conviction, It did not take the jury long to come back with a verdict. Chessey was convicted and sentenced.
Chessey was arrested at 4:41 p.m. today by Eureka Police Department for VC 5200(a) display of license plates and VC 14601.2(a) driving with a suspended license. He was released on O.R.
9/19/25: Court minutes for 9/18/25 in CR2400667 are not up & this particular clerk never has court minutes up on time like others. Admin knows. Other clerks are busy, do double duty & get their minutes up. After the post, the minutes were up in the afternoon so they have been added to the post.
I saw Mr. Schectman, he told me jury hung on the first count, conviction on other two. Chessey was sentenced to 1 day in jail & given credit for time served, three years probation, three month alcohol offender program and fines. Then he got arrested by EPD later the same day.
Chessey also has a civil case and I have added those documents. CV2501851 is a case David Chessey filed against James Shelton. Another Humboldt drama case wasting judges' time because in Humboldt, the few have to live with morons who can't adult.
Chessey filed petition for civil harassment on 9/2/25. A TRO was granted on 9/3 granted by Humboldt Superior Court Commissioner Sarah Kaber. The hearing on 9/24/25 was continued by Shelton to 10/23. Shelton did not stipulate to Commissioner Kaber hearing the matter; Humboldt Superior Court Judge Kelly Neel is disqualified so it was sent to Courtroom 2 in front of Humboldt Superior Court Retired Judge Christopher Wilson. The 10/23 court minutes are my last update because I do not have time to waste on the Humboldt Jerry Springer regulars.
