CA Governor Newsom tweeted about Charlie Kirk at the same time as the White House, AG Bondi and FBI Director, some media outlets correct earlier claims of a suspect being detained

Despite previous reports that a suspect had been detained, some media outlets have updated to correct that claim. The story is developing and different sources have different information. As usual, someone posted a photo of a man on X with no verification and no law enforcement in photo. Saw yet another tweet with people in the commenters attempting to correct misinformation. Major media outlets have no details and are all over the place. Three hours later, some initial details.

2:31 p.m. According to Bill Melugin of Fox News, "per multiple federal sources, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents in Utah have responded to the location of Charlie Kirk’s assassination & are assisting with the manhunt for the shooter, who remains at large. The prior reported arrest was not the assassin."

3:01 p.m.: CNN is reporting authorities are expected to hold a news conference shortly and that a "manhunt is underway for the suspect," according to two federal law enforcement officials. CNN was told, "he initial search has not recovered the gun used in the shooting."

3:21 p.m. Suspect in custody.

5 p.m. Subject in custody released after being interviewed by law enforcement; investigation continues.

9/11/25: Some media are reporting investigators found what appear to be messagess on the ammunition and the firearm recovered at the scene where Charlie Kirk was shot yesterday. No official details from law enforcement about those claims. Authorities found the found the rifle in the woods near the scene of the shooting along a path they believe the shooter used to escape. The FBI has declined to comment on reports of the messages. FBI has
