In January 2025, hate crimes suspect Daniel Epperson was granted mental health diversion by Judge Lawrence Killoran. In a related civil case, filed against Epperson by Melody Islam; a restraining order was granted for 3 years.
Epperson was arrested by Arcata Police Department on June 4, 2025 for PC 148(a)(1) resisting arrest, PC 69 resisting an executive officer and PC 1203.2(a)(2) probation violation. Epperson posted bond which at booking was $25,000.
On 7/21/25, Epperson was arraigned for the June 2025 arrest. The DA filed a complaint charging Epperson with Count 1 PC 69; alleged victims Matthew Pecsok and Efrain Sanchez. Count 2 PC 243 (b) battery on a peace officer; alleged victim Pecsok.
Deputy District Attorney Rebecca Buckley-Stein appeared on the case for the People. Public Defender's office is representing Epperson. Preliminary hearing is on 9/3.
9/3/25: Preliminary hearing continued by defense. Pre trial on 9/8; preliminary hearing on 9/30.
9/8/25: Preliminary hearing on 9/30.
9/30/25: Preliminary hearing continued by defense to 10/10.
10/10/25: Preliminary hearing continued to 11/19 by defense.
11/19/25: Preliminary hearing continued to 12/16 because defense not available this afternoon; motion granted over People's objection.
