(Joseph and Ryan)
(Ryan)
At 6:20 p.m. today, I was walking on C street near Grant. I saw a Pacific Towing truck and then heard a man say, "Bro, you need to go to the shelter? Do you need a shower?"
The man with his belongings on the street who was seated declined. I couldn't hear what he said. The man whose voice I heard said, "Here is $50." And told the guy seated near the truck and I am summarizing, these are not the exact words, to stay warm, be safe tonight and get some respite.
Then the man who gave the money said, "I am Ryan." The other guy said, "I am Joseph." They shook hands. Ryan was walking away as seen in one of the photos and then he went back to Joseph and said, "Here is a pizza."
I don't know Ryan. I don't know what he makes. $50 is not chump change for most working people. That pizza could have been Ryan's dinner.
At first, I did not want to take photos or use their names but as I kept walking on C street, I wanted to document this random act of kindness in today's society, particularly in Humboldt, where I see a lot of judgement, cries for help unheeded by those who have money to burn but are Scrooges and not enough Ryans. For a few moments today, Joseph's day will be better.
