On July 24, 2025, a Garberville Area CHP Officer attempted a speed enforcement stop on a Toyota Camry driven by Jose Gonzalez (29). Gonzalez refused to yield and fled at a high rate of speed northbound on US‑101, south of Standish-Hickey State Park. Gonzalez drove towards an active construction zone; at which time CHP discontinued the pursuit. CHP located the vehicle north of the construction zone and re‑initiated the pursuit headed towards Confusion Hill.
Gonzalez crossed over double yellow lines multiple times throughout the pursuit and continued northbound into Humboldt County. CHP again discontinued the pursuit through Richardson Grove. CHP located the vehicle again north of Big Foot Burl and continued the pursuit. The pursuit concluded, after a successful deployment of a spike strip, on US-101 at Dean Creek.
Upon taking Gonzalez into custody, CHP Officers located an unresponsive passenger in the Toyota, later identified as Josh Madison (35). CHP Officers immediately rendered aid, administering Narcan, and awaited medical transport.
Numerous stolen items of clothing, with retail tags and anti-theft devices, were located in the vehicle. Both Gonzalez and Madison were taken to the hospital for medical clearance and ultimately booked into Humboldt County Jail. Gonzalez was booked for 2800.2(a) VC, 23152(f) VC, and 11350(a) H&S. Madison was booked for 11550(a) H&S. Additionally charges for 496(a) PC will be recommended.
