I have been covering kidnapping, domestic violence and criminal threats suspect Jose Cruz's case since he was arrested. He had two 2023 case which were consolidated and the jury trial is for both cases.
His jury trial scheduled to start on 6/9 was continued to 6/10 because no judge and no courtroom was available.
On 6/10, it was assigned to Judge Kaleb Cockrum. Last week, motions in limine and jury selection took up most of the week. Jury was sworn in on 6/17, attorneys made opening statements.
Deputy District Attorney Candace Myers is the prosecutor for this case. Deputy Conflict Counsel R.J. Leohner is Cruz's attorney and he was appointed in October 2024 after Cruz's previous attorney Mario Tafur withdrew after wasting months with constant continuances.
