Grand theft suspect has previous failures to appear and at least three prior convictions

On December 17, I did a post on Ryan Michael Helmer. He was arrested  by Fortuna Police Department on a warrant for PC 503 embezzlement and PC 487(a) grand theft. He posted bond. The DA charged him with both those felonies.

On 9/5/23, after Helmer failed to appear at arraignment, the case was referred to DA for affadavit. That resulted in a warrant being issued. Arraignment is now scheduled for 1/29.

Helmer has two previous traffic cases and two criminal cases. Court records are posted below for all 5 cases, including the 2023 case. This isn't Helmer's first failure to appear. His record includes at least three convictions and an unsuccessful DEJ. I didn't have time to check further on his one 2021 case from Rio Dell Police Department sent to GC services.

2023 case:

Other cases:

1/29:
Arraigned. Public Defender appointed. Preliminary hearing on 3/19.

3/19: Preliminary hearing continued to 5/16. Deputy Public Defender Wade Orbelian made an oral motion to continue due to new discovery. Helmer is also trying to retain private counsel. Deputy District Attorney Jessica Watson had no objection. Retired Judge Marilyn Miles granted defense request.

5/16: Preliminary hearing continued by defense to 8/14 for setting of preliminary hearing/change of plea.

8/14: Preliminary hearing scheduled for 10/24.
