Deal or no deal for Bear River homicide suspect today?

Setting of preliminary hearing is scheduled this morning for Bear River homicide suspect Mauricio Johnson.  It was continued to September 30 at the request of the DA's office for further discussions with tribal members.

"At least 20 + supporters for the victims are in court," a family friend of the victims told me today . "Only three people for Maurico aka Maury, his mother, Melissa Johnson aka Melissa Thomas, aunt Joy Brenard, and Jorge Johnson."

Defense previously made an offer. As of yesterday, District Attorney Maggie Fleming told me that discussions were still going on with the family. No decision had been made.

A source close to the family members of the victims said they are not too keen about a plea deal. That source also confirmed discussions are ongoing.

Sometimes after discussions with the DA, the family does agree to a plea deal. The likelihood of that happening today is slim but anything is possible. Those close to the family are hoping that there is no rush to make a deal today.

The family members of the victim and the community are upset that the other suspect, Von Keener, posted bail. They thanked me for that post.

Ms. Andrea Sullivan is Johnson's attorney. Deputy District Attorney Roger Rees is the prosecutor for the case.

Johnson is charged with three counts of murder; one special allegation of personally and intentionally discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury/death and one special allegation of multiple murder.
