California is ordering a statewide mask mandate for indoor public spaces to go into effect on Wednesday. This affects those counties who do not currently have an indoor mask mandate which is about 50 percent of the population.
This is a precaution due to a surge in coronavirus cases and concerns about the Omicron variant. The per capita rate of new coronavirus cases in California has jumped 47 percent in the past two weeks. The statewide indoor mask mandate order will last a month and will expire on January 15.
“We know people are tired and hungry for normalcy. Frankly, I am too,”California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said at today's press conference, “That said, this is a critical time where we have a tool that we know has worked and can work.”
California is tightening existing testing requirements by ordering unvaccinated people attending indoor events where 1,000 people or more are in attendance. People must either prove they are vaccinated or show they tested negative to a COVID-19 antigen test within one day of the event, or a PCR test within two days.
The state is also recommending that all travelers be tested for COVID-19 within three to five days of arrival in California.
