It is time for the full Senate to end PACER's costly fees

A bipartisan bill has been sent to the full Senate for consideration.  This would make the federal judiciary's PACER electronic court record system and downloading of filings free for the public through the elimination of costly fees currently charged.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted to send the Open Courts Act of 2021 to the full Senate today.

The panel approved the measure on voice vote without any recorded opposition and nearly all of the committee members elected to co-sponsor the legislation by the end of the hearing.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, the Senate Judiciary Committee's Chair said that while big law firms have no problem paying those fees; the charges are costly for individuals, small business, small law firms and non-profits.

There is enough coverage online for those not familiar with past attempts, the opposition and PACER's fees that hinders transparency and access to the public.
