Judge Christopher Wilson heard certain cases during trial assignment this morning. These were cases Judge Kaleb Cockrum had a conflict with or was disqualified on and one of those cases was for Rickey Warren.
Deputy Conflict Counsel April Van Dyke is Warren's attorney. He was on for change of plea.
The case had not resolved. There was discussion about what Warren wanted and he had not agreed to the plea. He wanted to talk to Ms. Van Dyke.
DA Maggie Fleming explained why Warren's offer was not acceptable to the People. Eventually, a conditional plea was put on record. This was after Judge Wilson's remarks to Warren. Ms. Van Dyke called and spoke to her client privately.
Prior to that, when Warren had rejected an offer.Ms. Van Dyke told Judge Wilson what Warren wanted as a deal.
Judge Wilson told Warren, "You want fries with that." Then Judge Wilson added, " I am just kidding."
Ms. Van Dyke responded, "That was unneccesary."
Judge Wilson went into Warren's criminal history and explained to Warren what was realistic if he wanted to resolve his case and the options he had under the law.
"You are not in the driver's seat," Judge Wilson said to Warren.
