Criminals in Old Town were nice enough to take a 15 minute break for Officer Ross's walk with citizens

Today was the second time Eureka Police Department Old Town Officer Brian Ross
invited citizens to take a short walk during lunchtime, learn about his job and ask him questions.

Pictured above is Officer Ross with newly hired EPD Officer JJ and Sequoia Neighborhood Watch and retired city employee Mary Maloney. Two probation department employees also took time out during their lunch hour. We started at the Gazebo and walked a few blocks around Old Town.

Ms. Maloney and the probation department employees asked Officer Ross several questions. Today's walk was uneventful as far as any incidents during the walk but very informative.

Right after the walk ended, Officer Ross had to go deal with a violation of parole.

In response to questions, Officer Ross shared that he averages 7 arrests a week. Most of the arrests are for possession of drugs and vandalism. No shoplifters.

Despite not receiving Measure Z funding for this round, Officer Ross still refers, assists and drops off anyone who wishes to take advantage of Waterfront Recovery Services. With Measure Z funding, it was easier because a bed could be reserved. Now, there isn't a guarantee and the person ends up on the waiting list.

Probation also did not receive Measure Z funding and has the same issue of getting people into services right away because there are only so many beds available.

The two walks organized so far have not attracted any Old Town residents. Most of the business owners and employees are working and know Officer Ross well. The walks are advertised on the EPD Facebook page.

I work and live in Old Town and see the huge difference Officer Ross has made daily.
