California gets $7.4 million from Target to settle hazardous waste lawsuit
Target Corporation agreed to a $7.4 million settlement to resolve a hazardous waste lawsuit by California state and local officials.
In the lawsuit, it was alleged that between 2012 and 2016 the chain allegedly disposed batteries, light bulbs, medical waste, syringes and other environmentally hazardous materials improperly in landfills across California.
Target will pay $3.2 million in fines, $3 million to conduct compliance inspections and audits of its trash facilities, plus additional money for environmental projects.
This is the second settlement of allegations that Target violated hazardous waste rules. Under a 2011 settlement, Target agreed to pay $22.5 million in penalties, court fees and environmental funding.
