After several dumpster fires, why do Old Town businesses need a reminder on potential fire hazards?

An email was sent out to Old Town business owners by Eureka Main Street.

"Sgt. La France has asked us to remind all business owners in Downtown and Old Town to please break down palettes and don't leave them by dumpsters. They are both a fire hazard, and an environmental problem. Recently one encampment was found to have been built with 80 palettes. This morning there were palettes in Snug Alley and Opera Alley. This picture was taken yesterday. "

This is what Sgt. LaFrance asked, "Any idea who is putting the pallets out?  They are either going to get burned or brought into the woods and used to make an encampment. "

We just had a spate of dumpster fires. I have had to call EPD about palletes being left in the alley near 3rd and I. Saw a guy trying to light them.

Remember the dumpster on the Kurt Kramer owned property where someone someone set a mattress on fire? It is still not secured.

Last three nights, despite the weather, between the hours of 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. the dumpster divers have been out rattling and emptying the recycables on 2nd street, yelling and screaming and fighting. Most city lamps are not functional on 2nd street so its dark and the regular bums are wandering about their usual hangouts on 3rd and 4th street, camped out near the Adorni Center.  Thankfully, J.D. Pittman hasnt been screaming since he was taken into custody.

Thank you Ninth Circuit for making it harder to enforce laws against drunks, addicts and bums who rather hang out all hours of the night, drink, get high than go to a shelter. Or the belligerent guy in the hoodie dragging his recyclables and other stash early a.m. being loud and obnoxious.

This pallette problem has been going on since Chief Andy Mills was in town. I was on a walk with him one day and he talked with business owners about the same issues. At what point are the business owners who are leaving these pallettes and other materials around take responsibility?
