Suspect who shot and killed Newman officer is in the country illegally

In a news conference this morning, Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said his department has identified the suspect but will not release his name of the man who they believe shot and killed Newman officer Ronil Singh. Sheriff Christianson said the suspect is in the country illegally.

The suspect is still in Stanilaus County and considered armed and dangerous.
Officer Singh was conducting a DUI stop when he was shot.

Officer Singh was called an American patriot by the Newman police chief Randy Richardson who teared up as he spoke. With a department of a dozen officers, the impact of Officer Singh's death was highlighted in the following remarks by Chief Richardson.

"This is a man that I saw every day he worked. This is a man that I relieved on Christmas day so he could go home and spend time with his family and his newborn child. I think that what’s being lost here is, yes, he was a police officer and that’s why all of you are packed in this room -- because he was tragically taken from us. But what needs to be known is he was truly just a human being and an American patriot."

12/28 update:

Arriaga was arrested in Kern County.
Arriaga' s brother and a co-worker were arrested for intentionally misleading law enforcement. Arriaga has two prior DUI arrests, active warrants and  Sureno gang affiliations.

Arriaga entered the U.S. illegally through Arizona.  He is from Mexico. Arriaga was trying to flee to Mexico after he killed Officer Singh. Sheriff Christianson spoke about how SB54 prevents local law enforcement from sharing information with ICE.
