Archdiocese and Catholic school will not press charges against nuns who allegedly embezzled $500,000

Two nuns who worked at at St. James Catholic School in Torrance, retired earlier this year, allegedly embezzled as much as $500,000 in tuition, fees and donations.

The amount only includes what auditors have been able to trace through six years’ of bank records and might not include other cash transactions.

Parents and school officials claim that the nuns told them the school was operating on a shoestring budget but have been spending the money on trips and casinos.

Update: After the initial news was made public, the Archdiocese has decided to press charges.
