From a summer job, he went on to purchase his own boat after college & started his own business
Trevor Michel is a young entrepreneur, based in Ferndale.
I learned about Michel through Supervisor Rex Bohn and Shannon Miranda. And I knew that I wanted to share Michel's story.
"My dad Thomas exposed my brother and I into fishing and outdoors at a young age," said Michel. "My dad had a sport boat that he would take the whole family out in the ocean crabbing and fishing. I was given a proper introduction to the commercial fishing industry from my brother Travis. My older brother Travis got into the fishing industry three years before me and he helped me get my first deckhand position with George Boling on the Fishing Vessel Sunup out of Eureka. George treated me right and commercial trolling was the perfect summer job for me while I was in college. After college I went on to purchase my own boat."
"This season, I asked a small family owned cannery in Charleston, Oregon to can 3000 lbs of my own Fresh Albacore Tuna," Michel told me.
"I have 4 kinds of tuna: smoked, no salted, salted, and garlic/jalapeno. I try to do orders by the case and you can mix your own case. There are twenty-four 8 ounce cans per case. The price $168/case or $7/can. This is gourmet quality, fresh, troll caught, bled Albacore, packed in nothing (dry packed). Each fish is individually bled as I catch it. My product is unlike anything you will find in any grocery store bar-none."
Michel is the proud owner of The Fishing Vessel Roma. " It was hand-built in 1941 in Everette WA by shipwright George Siverson," said Michel. "It is a seaworthy vessel capable of holding 8 tons of product. She holds 905 gallons of fuel and is powered by a 4-71 Detroit Diesel engine. The vessel has fished from the waters of Monterey Bay CA up to Alaska. I have had it over 100 miles offshore chasing Albacore and I currently fish it in CA, OR and WA waters. The boat measures 42ft long, 12ft wide and draws 6ft of water."
Call Michel at (707) 845-6884 or message him via Facebook.
