Humboldt's future: Green rush or senior rush?

Retirees or out of town investors wanting to cash in on the green rush. Where will Humboldt be a few years from now?

Unless you have a family business to inherit or have a relative or friend that can get you a job with the County or State (field office) Humboldt isn't where anyone,  flocks to for stability, unless you are retiring. With marijuana being legalized, how many smaller cannabis businesses will survive?

Is Humboldt's future what High Times predicted?

"When California voters legalized marijuana for adults 21 and over in November, they created—in theory—a commercial cannabis industry. In the months since the voters gaveth, cities and counties have been busy taking away. Bans, moratoriums or other limits on marijuana cultivation and sales are de rigueur in certain areas of the state."

"Land grabs have also been underway in the state’s traditional homes for marijuana cultivation. Once hippie-settled and hippie-friendly, rural areas in Humboldt and Mendocino counties have been beset by investors “behaving… like multinational corporations in Third World countries,” one grower complained to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Like La Mesa, Humboldt County was also one of the California jurisdictions to regulate and license marijuana production and/or sales rather than ban it."

Or jobs related to a population of retirees?

According to quite a few realtors, construction businesses, and insurance agents I spoke to, 35% of total homes (buyers or those who get new homes constructed) are from out of the area. Not every one is buying real estate to grow cannabis.

One construction business owner told me, many of his clients are retirees.

Timber and fishing industries  have been decimated. How long before the cannabis industry follows the same path? Nepotism and an aversion to outsiders has all added up to no growth and limited options for the local economy.

Humboldt has a lot to offer. Rural and natural beauty, clean air, clean water.  The residents who chose to live here should have several options to thrive financially.

  1. All side business from the illegal pot is and has been drying up. The cash flush growers stopped spending money like drunken sailors on leave months ago. From Fabricators building hidden compartments in motorhomes to contractors building safe rooms, the cash jobs have dried up. Same thing happened after Prohibition. Sure there will still be a few people making Shine, but the Revenuers will take care of them.
