211 Director Jeanette Hurst
From Ms. Hurst:
"We are putting on an event for our community on Nov. 4th called Dare to Prepare. This event was set up so that our community members have important information they need to be ready for our own disaster."
"There will be 17 governmental and non governmental agencies talking about how we can best be prepared for a disaster, from how to treat water to the proper use of a fire extinguisher.
"We are doing this for the benefit of our community, hopefully they will walk out with the knowledge of what they need to do to be prepared before, during and after a disaster."
Press Release:
On Saturday, November 4th from 12-4pm at the Adorni Center in Eureka, 2-1-1 Humboldt, in collaboration with Humboldt State University, is hosting an event called "Dare to Prepare”. This Free event is designed to teach residents of Humboldt County how to prepare for a natural disaster. Open to the community, attendees will be introduced to engaging resources that are vital to preparedness before and after a disaster.
2-1-1 is a national phone number used for vital information after a disaster regarding shelters, food and water resources, medicine distribution locations, road closures, and animal care. 2-1-1's throughout the U.S. have the ability to send or take calls from any 2-1-1 areas and connect callers with a local database of resources and vital information.
Other event attendees include St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County, California Conservation Corp, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Humboldt Community Blood Bank, Office of Emergency Services (OES), Humboldt Bay Fire Department, Companion Animals and many others. The event will feature fire trucks and local CHP for kids to interact with, along with free hot dogs and face painting.
2-1-1's throughout the U.S. processed 250,000 calls in the first 4 days after the recent Hurricanes, including our own Local 2-1-1 which is still answering calls and text messages from those looking for vital resources in Texas and Florida. With the recent wildfires in Northern California, 2-1-1 is now providing essential support to those in need.
“Dare to Prepare” was developed to empower and educate community members with vital information, to bring awareness about 2-1-1 and to help fund our local 2-1-1 as it moves toward non-profit status.
Interesting timing.
