Wes Weir thanks Supervisor Virginia Bass for her help with affordable housing, specifically a Project Based Voucher Program

After receiving Supervisor Virginia Bass' press release regarding her kickoff next Tuesday, I reached out to Supervisor Bass and asked her if she could share with me some information on few projects and goals she is working on already and will continue, if elected for another term as Supervisor.

This is just one of the projects.

Wes Weir, thank you note to Supervisor Virginia Bass:
“As you know, I have been looking for ways in which the Housing Authority of the County of Humboldt (HA)could utilize our position to stimulate the development of more affordable housing.  The HUD budget has not been especially kind to Housing Authorities across the country, and our options were quite limited."

We had been looking at implementing a Project Based Voucher (PBV) Program for some time, but lacked the internal policies.  This type of program is a high risk high reward venture.  If it was not done correctly, we ran the risk of a setback that might not afford us a second chance.

I had been working with Chris Dart and the City for some time, and while DANCO had a viable project, that required a program like PBV to gain approval, we just could not seem to get on the same page.  I truly appreciate the fact that you stepped forward, helping to find a solution that will benefit this community.  I don’t think we could have gotten this done without you.

More importantly, we now have a mechanism in place that will allow the HA to look to the future, leveraging this program to stimulate the type of financial commitment that will allow us to support additional projects designed to develop affordable housing in our community.  Thank you.”

  1. Let's flip that coin and see the Bass district, the homelessness, filthy tweakers that roam Downtown Eureka. Pissing, shitting in alleys and doorways. Thrashing and stealing anthing they can get their hands on. Police presence is lacking, perhaps due to lack of funding. But let's build a daycare to get them off the streets when tourists are around, really. Close the Betty Chinn program and stop the revolving door. Put that money towards the protection of the citizens who have to deal with this everyday.. Betty Chinn should retire and enjoy her life instead of helping people that won't help themselves but are there for the handout. While the citizens suffer with vandalism, burglars, thieves, people with no regard, no real threat of prosecution. .. We need a serious change in this town and 4 more years of the same thing won't work...
