City of Eureka committed to transfer all City owned property on Indian Island to Wiyot Tribe

In March of 2015, the Wiyot Tribe made a request to the City of Eureka for the transfer of the city owned property on Indian Island.

The island is a ceremonial center to Wiyot people and a significant historical and cultural resource to the Tribe. The Wiyot Tribe has expressed its continued commitment to the ongoing environmental stewardship, management, and restoration of Indian Island.

As a result of that request, the City and the Tribe have engaged in discussions
regarding the transfer of all City owned lands on Indian Island. This transfer does not impact the private property owners on the island. These discussions have been
ongoing and there are a number of legal issues that must be resolved before the
transfer may occur.

The City of Eureka and the Wiyot Tribe are committed to the transfer of the island, and
are bringing forward a Memorandum of Agreement at the July 18 Eureka City Council meeting, to confirm the Tribe’s and City’s commitment to this process.
