It is a full house for Daryl Jones with alleged victims, law enforcement and two supporters of Jones who seem to think anyone can just demand documents from the DA

For the fourth time I submitted a media request in terroristic and criminal threat suspect Daryl Jones case I have been the only one to apply the last two times. Once again, it was granted by Judge Timothy Canning. Jones attorney, Conflict Counsel Meagan O'Connell, filed an opposition on Wednesday, 8/20/25, two days before the weekend which I have not seen. The DA had no knowledge of it this morning. The file is with the Judge. I could not even file a response last week because the clerk cannot accept it due to required timelines. The hearing is this morning.

Let's see what happens today. I was told the case is scheduled before Judge Timothy Canning. I have already consulted with lawyers. If you haven't, you should read my July 18 post.

I was the first one to report on a restraining order filed against Jones. If the DA amends the complaint to add her as an alleged victim as it was suggested in the civil lawsuit filed by Alannah Smith, that could impact the preliminary hearing or a last minute continuance.

10:06 a.m. Deputy DA Roger Rees is here for the preliminary hearing. I checked with him and there is no amendment to the complaint for the preliminary hearing. The DA can amend the charges later.

Ms. Smith is here with her attorney, Ms. Joanne Carter. There are at least 5 other alleged victims or community members here. Others maybe on Zoom.

CHP is here, EPD is here and APD. I saw 7 law enforcement witnesses.

Only other media here this morning is KAEF/KRCR 's  Veonna King and Lost Coast Outpost's Ryan Burns.

I believe there are atleast two people here in support of Jones. I saw them later at the DA's office asking for documents filed in the case and then later at the clerk's office. The DA cannot even hand out all documents and reports even to media.

This preliminary hearing is such a waste of time. Jones will be held to answer. He is charged with 19 felonies in one case and two counts of criminal threats

Defense is already mentioning mental health diversion. Jones was already evaluated once after doubt was declared and there was a ruling that he competent to stand trial and criminal proceedings were reinstated.

Preliminary hearing and defense objection to my media request was put over until 1:30 p.m. Ms. O'Connell has a doctor's appointment this morning. Also, no court reporter is available this morning. "Given the nature of the charges and community interest," Mr. Rees told Judge Canning that having a court reporter was preferred over a recording.

From court remarks, if preliminary hearing proceeds, it will continue to tomorrow.

Let's see what happens today with my media request this afternoon. I documented some issues last time; one of them was rectified by court administration putting in procedure for media requests. I have discussed certain ongoing concerns with lawyers and prepared a letter in response but I don't know if Judge Canning can or will receive it in court. Ms. O'Connell gets to speak in court. I don't.

1:30 p.m. Times Standard's Sage Alexander was in court this afternoon. The two supporters for Jones were not in court.

2p.m. My media request was granted. Photo only which I will share with KRCR and LOCO. I add attorney remarks and Judge Canning's ruling when I have time, which may not be until a few days, because today was a victory for the First Amendment. Mr. Rees and Judge Canning did address some of what I wanted to say. I may share parts of the letter which are relevant to what was stated in court today. I wrote that without knowing what Ms. O'Connell would say.

I will correct some of Ms. O'Connell's inaccuracies. She said in court, no defendant has been photographed before sentencing. Daniella Moore and Richard Stobaugh are just two examples that contradict her claim.

She also could not recall whether it was on my blog or media petition that I said violent offenses. I didn't realize my media request form was a petition. So Ms. O'Connell thinks alleged death and other threats detailed in court documents and charges are not violent?

Ms. O'Connell chose to file a written opposition  which is a public filing that I have not seen. Her late filing prevents me the opportunity to respond to any inaccuracies and I was not allowed to correct an inaccuracy last time because the discussion took place in a closed courtroom and a ruling was issued. 12 plus years of covering local courts and I don't recall a single written opposition to any media request. Prior to that in other cities and covered court, I have never encountered roadblocks.

Ms. O'Connell requested her client be dressed in civilian clothing. So we are on break until 3 p.m.
