Jake Combs homicide case continued but the bigger news is that he picked up a new 2025 case for possession of meth in jail and has special allegation of a prior felony conviction

Jake Combs 2022 homicide case which was sent back to Humboldt Superior Court after his murder conviction was overturned on appeal had trial confirmation scheduled today. Judge Kaleb Cockrum granted Public Defender Luke Brownfield's motion to continue the jury trial which was scheduled for 8/18 over Deputy District Attorney Whitney Timm's objection. Trial setting is scheduled for 9/16.

The bigger news is that Combs has a new 2025  case he was arraigned on yesterday on Count 1 for possession of meth in jail. There is also a special allegation for prior conviction for serious and violent felony.

Ms. Timm and Mr. Brownfield appeared on that case. Combs is on no bail status in his 2022 case and Visiting Judge Ksenia Tsenin kept the same custody status for the 2025 case. Setting of preliminary hearing for the 2025 case was scheduled for today and was continued by defense to 9/16 since it is trailing the 2022 case. I

Second District Supervisor and Humboldt Board Chair Michelle Bushnell was there for today's hearing, the previous court hearing as she has consistently been for every hearing to support the Earley family.

9/16/25: Readiness Conference on 1/13/26; jury trial on 1/26/26.
