When you are a Humboldt criminal, conflicts of interest for attorneys is not unusual

Convicted murderer Jacob Steele was convicted of second degree murder of Jerry George in 2012. Steele is not eligible for parole until 2034.

He was transported back from State Prison to Humboldt for a Franklin hearing/resentencing. Steele Steele wants to file a writ of habeas corpus. Previous posts linked below have information on this type of hearing.

First, the Public Defender declared a conflict so the Court had to look for a private attorney. Hearings got continued. Ms. Andrea Sullivan agreed to represent him. Today, she had to declare a conflict and was relieved. Ms. Sullivan mentioned two attorneys, Don Anderson and Thomas Fiemer, who have no active cases in Humboldt that she had spoken with about taking over Steele's case.  It is not her responsibility but that it the kind of person and attorney Ms. Sullivan is and Steele's family thanked her.

They are contacting the appropriate channels to contract with the County to get appointed.

Judge Timothy Canning tried to get private attorneys present in court today to take the case, they declined. Steel's case is in limbo.

When an attorney declares a conflict, the reason is confidential.

  1. I agree with you about Sullivan, she's a credit to the defense bar. I wouldn't wish Don Anderson on my worst enemy, but Tom Fiemer is smart, hard-working, and ethical.
