Large amount of cash seized from vehicle belonging to reckless driving suspect
On October 22, 2019 at about 12:16 p.m., an Officer of the Eureka Police Department (EPD) observed a grey Toyota truck traveling southbound in the center turn lane at approximately 60 MPH near the 2700 block of Broadway.
The officer attempted to catch up to the Toyota to initiate an enforcement stop for the reckless driving; however, before the officer could catch up, the truck was involved in a traffic collision with two other vehicles and a light pole at the intersection of Broadway and Truesdale Streets.
As a result of the impact, the driver of one of the victim vehicles sustained minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. The driver of the suspect vehicle was taken into custody without further incident and identified as Donald Chance Curley (40 of Redway).
Based on circumstances at the scene, a search warrant was served on Curley’s vehicle. As a result of the search, a large amount of cash was seized from the vehicle. No other items of evidentiary value were located.
Curley was transported to the hospital for precautionary medical clearance before being booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility (HCCF) for felony evading and reckless driving. The reason for Curley’s reckless driving is not known. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is handling the traffic collision investigation. This is an ongoing investigation and further details will be released as available.

How much cash is a large amount? And City can just take it without items indicating criminal behavior? I did not know that.
